We never get paid, we uyw give notice that we will insert nothing of the sort hereafter unless accom panied by the cash. (Always excepting in the case of ieceased volunteers, when we require no pay.) The Coat of Mail.—Just before Napoleon Mt out for the court of Belgium, he sent to the clev erest artizan of his class in Paris, and demanded ot him whether he would engage to make a coat of mail, to be worn under the ordinary drees, wbich should be absolutely bullet-proof; and that if so, he might name his own price for such • work. The man engaged to make the desired ob ject, if allowed proper time, and he named eigh teen thousand francs as the price for it. The bargain was concluded, and in due time the work was produced, and its maker honored with a sec ond audience of the emperor. “>«ow,'’ said his imperial majesty, “put it on.” The man did so. “As I am to stake my life on its efficiency, you will, I suppose, have no objections to do the same.” And he took a brace ot pistols and prepared to fire one ot them at the breast of the astonished artizan. There wtis no retreating however, and half dead with tear, he stood the fire, to the io- ^ finite credit of his work, with perfect impunity. But the emperor was not content with one trial; ‘ he fired the second pistol at the back of the trem- ' bling artizan, and afterwards discharged a fowling piece at another part of him, with a similar effect. “Well,” said the emperor, “you have produced a capital work, undoubtedly—what is the price of it?” “Eighteen thousand francs were named as the agreed sum.” “There is an order for them," said the emperor, “and here ia another, for an equal sum, for the fright that 1 have given to you.” The Eutaw (Alabama) “W’hig” has a corres pondent who tells the following as a lady’s pre scription for making the war a short one: A widower of an adjoining county found awip- some widow in this neighborhood, whom he per suaded to become his wife. Tiie evening before the wedding he stopped in the vicinity to stay o^er night, (the marriage to take place next morning,) at a neighbor’s. Mrs. L. was there—- calling—(we all know Mrs. L .) She seem ed to get indignant at any one’s getting married these war times, and expressed herself after this wise: “Well nowl I do thfnk the President ought to put a stop to any more marrying until this war is over. It he’d just make a law that there warn’* to be any more marrying until this here war was done, I tell you the men would soon pitch in and do the work, and I teil you what I think the wo men would help no little ” The bridegroom looked solemn like, but I tell you the Parson—(you know Purson ,) en joyed it out loud. We have heard ot but one old woman that “kissed her cow,” but there are thousands of young ones that ki&5 great calves. A j\ew Law Book* Cattiweirs Practice at EjUW.
